Fall weddings can be beautiful and as wedding photographers, they are one of our favorite types of weddings to photograph. There’s something magical about saying “I do” in autumn. The warm tones and vibrant foliage of fall can be a romantic wedding backdrop. In recent years, fall weddings have become more popular than summer weddings.
We’ve photographed many fall weddings. In our experience, we suggest having a plan if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

No matter what fall wedding venue you’re looking at, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.
Fall Weather
Fall weather can be tricky and unpredictable, especially in New York. A wedding in late September can feel like a summer wedding and an October wedding can feel like a winter wedding. Plan accordingly. As you get closer to the date, you’ll have a more accurate forecast, yet, you should have a plan B early on. Here’s a great article with some excellent tips for fall wedding weather.
Sunsets In The Fall
The sun sets much earlier in the fall and we’ve seen couples barely have enough daylight to capture outdoor photographs after the ceremony. Once you set your fall wedding date, head over to Google and search “sunset time” and your city and wedding date. This will help you plan your ceremony. If you find sunset time in your city is 6:19, then you’ll want to plan for a ceremony no later than 4 pm. The wedding photographer should be highly competent with using flash to capture the perfect images as the sun sets. If possible tour the venue the year before during the same month to get an idea of what things will look like.
Fall Hair And Makeup
For the bride and bridal party, choose hair and make-up that accommodate the fall weather and its backdrop. While it’s more likely to rain in spring or summer, fall weather can bring unexpected rain, high winds, or high humidity. While the wedding venue should have options for plan B, a makeup artists and hair stylists can help you choose the right look and the right products for a gorgeous fall wedding look as well as take the weather into consideration. Even if you’re doing your own hair and makeup, it might be good to consult a makeup artist and a hair stylist for some expert advice.
